Birmingham

1880s - 1890s. A typescript note added to the back of the photograph much later states that the pub stood where the new wholesale markets now stand. The licensee and his wife are stood in the doorway, George Edwin Benwell (1840 - 1920) and his wife Emma (nee Barnett) (1843 - 1903). George was originally a brass founder during the first half of his life and became a manager at Cartlands in Constitution Hill before retiring to run the anchor. The photograph was deposited at Birmingham Library by a descendent of George Benwell. The Anchor pub at corner of Rea Street and Bradford Street, Birmingham
